Devices to help collaboration.

Cell phones are obvious tools.

Lots of people believe that special purpose small devices can help collaboration along. I used Shockfish's Spotme technology at an event in Singapore. It was a huge hit with the partipants, and did what it was supposed to do. It uses a unique wireless network that can tell how far the spotme devices are away from the transmitters, to get a decent fix on where the person holding the device is.

When you get near someone you either want to see, or with whom you share an interest, it buzzes and shows you a picture of the person, so you can go introduce yourself.

Peter Merholz wrote about thinking tags, also called Memetags.

Methods of enhancing face to face collaboration:

The search for information on the Listening to the City forums made me think it might be useful to document some tools groups can use to supercharge their collaboration work.

I often use Microsoft Word, a laptop and a projector for this purpose. it works great. Take turns scribing headlines, and project them during the meeting. I like to reverse the type so that you can work with the room lights up. Creating a table is helpful to keep the headlines organized and numbered.

Way of Getting Large Groups to Design Solutions

In a conversation with Jerry, he expressed curiosity about how New York City organized the "Listening to the City" forums in which interested people could provide design input into the "Ground Zero" redesign.

I looked around, and found out that the site redesign process is sponsored by The Alliance to Rebuild Downtown New York. The "Listening to the City" group organized the big forum at the Javits center on July 20th, 2002. Over 4,300 people participated. The event was designed and run by a group in Washington called, America Speaks.

They in turn are part of an organization dedicated to "Deliberative Democracy".

On their site, I found some great articles about the Listening to the City work. And references to Carolyn Lukensmeyer, who seems to have some great insights into how to create huge group problem solving processes.

Also there was a reference on the Deliberative Democracy site to Beth Simone Noveck and her firm Bodies Electric, and their Unchat application.

Finally a firm called Group Jazz also does this kind of work. They list Howard Rheingold and the Knowhere Store as collaborators.

More fun less stuff

Jerry pointed me to a nice HTML cheatsheet where I quickly learned how to link the images you see below to my blog. Thanks Jerry!

The empathy suit below reminds me of one of my favorite editioned works of art. Joseph Beuys' felt suit from 1970.

Maybe I'll put an obesity-empathy suit on a hangar and call it art.

They have empathy suits for obesity.

we need them for mental states

How to Terraform Mars. And another interesting article.
I think it will be really important as human lives start to grow much longer in the next decades, to find another planet to live on. I think long lives will also enable humans to take on much bigger long term projects (like making Mars habitable), and creating non-lethal means of expressing aggression.
